From the Head of Education’s Desk

At Earlybird, we know that exceptional learning experiences for children begin with exceptional team members.

That is why professional development is not something we do once or twice a year. It is embedded into the way we work every day. Through ongoing mentorship, coaching, training, classroom observations, and professional appraisals, we support every team member on a journey of continuous growth. By investing in our people, we not only strengthen the quality of education we provide, but also create meaningful pathways for career progression, allowing talented team members to grow into new roles and leadership opportunities within the Earlybird family.

Our Formal and Informal Appraisal processes are designed to celebrate strengths, identify opportunities for development, and provide meaningful support tailored to each team member’s needs. Formal appraisals provide structured reflection and goal-setting, while informal, unscheduled observations allow for real-time feedback, mentorship, and coaching. This approach extends beyond our teaching teams to include Facilities Maintenance Staff (FMS) and Custodians, recognising the important role every team member plays in creating exceptional environments for children to learn and thrive.

These processes are strengthened by ongoing training, quarterly network-wide professional development sessions, leadership development opportunities, and specialised roles, creating a culture where learning never stops. By spending meaningful time in classrooms and centres, both centre leadership and central support teams remain connected to the heart of our organisation: the children we serve, the team members we support, and the learning experiences we strive to enrich every day.

Professional growth at Earlybird extends beyond appraisals and training sessions. Throughout the year, team members have opportunities to take on additional responsibilities that allow them to deepen their expertise, contribute to the wider organisation, and develop their leadership skills.  These experiences provide valuable pathways for growth while strengthening the quality of learning across our organisation.

Together, these processes ensure that professional development remains continuous, relevant, and responsive, supporting both individual growth and excellence across our centres.

The results speak for themselves.

Over the years, many of our team members have grown their careers within the Earlybird family.  Their success is a reflection of their dedication, passion, and commitment to lifelong learning, as well as the support structures in place to help them thrive.

As we celebrate Women’s Day, we are especially proud to recognise the incredible women who make up the majority of our teaching and leadership teams. Every day, they nurture curiosity, build confidence, inspire learning, and make a lasting impact on the lives of children and families.

Principal Thembs

Thembs’ journey is a wonderful example of what can happen when dedication meets opportunity. Beginning her Earlybird career as a custodian, she steadily progressed through the roles of Green Group Teaching Assistant and Lead Teacher before becoming Principal of our Blue Door Centre at Absa Towers.

Her growth reflects years of commitment to learning, professional development, and excellence in practice, and serves as a powerful reminder that investing in people creates opportunities not only for individual success, but for stronger teams, centres, and learning experiences for children.

Principal Sonika

Sonika’s journey is another wonderful example of what can happen when passion, dedication, and continuous learning come together. Beginning her Earlybird career as a teacher, she embraced opportunities to grow and develop, progressing through a number of leadership roles, including Orange Group AGER, where she supported age-specific training and best practice across our network, before becoming Head Teacher and ultimately Principal of our Carlswald Centre. Most recently, she was appointed as an Associate, a role entrusted to a select group of experienced leaders who contribute to the growth and success of the wider Earlybird network. Her journey reflects a commitment to excellence, strong leadership, and the many opportunities for professional growth that exist within our organisation.

Principal Georgia

Georgia’s journey is a wonderful example of how experience, expertise, and a commitment to continuous growth can create meaningful leadership opportunities. After developing her skills as a teacher, she went on to serve as an Orange Group AGER, supporting age-specific training and best practice across our network. Her leadership abilities saw her progress into the role of Head Teacher before becoming Principal of our centre at The Parks, which she has successfully led for a number of years.

Georgia has also been appointed as an Associate, a role that enables her to share her experience and contribute to projects and initiatives that support the wider Earlybird network. Her journey reflects the value of investing in professional growth and the opportunities available to educators who consistently strive for excellence.

Teacher Tebogo

Tebogo’s journey is a wonderful reflection of Earlybird’s commitment to growing talent from within. Beginning her career as a Custodian, she progressed through the roles of Blue Group Teaching Assistant and Orange Group Teaching Assistant, where she was mentored by Principal Sonika.  Today, Tebogo leads her own Orange Group classroom under the guidance of the very leader who helped shape her journey. Her growth reflects years of dedication, continuous learning, and the value of mentorship in developing confident, capable educators.

Earlybird creates opportunities for growth at every level of the organisation because we know that the quality of children’s learning experiences is directly linked to the growth and development of the teachers who guide them. When our people thrive, our children benefit.

And that is something worth celebrating.

Happy Women’s Day to the remarkable women of Earlybird. Your commitment to learning, leadership, and nurturing young minds strengthens our centres, enriches our communities, and leaves a lasting impact on the children and families we serve. Thank you for all that you do.
